Hebrews 4:9
There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.
John Wesley drew from verses 1-11 for his song “Lord, I Believe A Rest Remains” (full lyrics and sheet music here):
Lord; I believe a rest remains,
To all thy people known,
A rest where pure enjoyment reigns,
And thou art loved alone.
A rest, where all our souls desire
Is fixed on things above;
Where fear and sin, and grief expire,
Cast out by perfect love.
O that I now the rest might know,
Believe, and enter in!
Now Savior, now the power bestow,
And let me cease from sin!
Remove all hardness from my heart,
This unbelief remove;
To me the rest of faith impart,
The sabbath of thy love.
Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
There are a number of excellent hymn lyrics from this verse. James Montgomery’s stands out for its simplicity:
Thy word, Almighty Lord,
Where’er it enters in,
Is sharper than a two-edged sword
To slay the man of sin.
Thy word is power and life;
It bids confusion cease,
And changes envy, hatred, strife,
To love, and joy, and peace.
Then let our hearts obey
The gospel’s glorious sound,
And all its fruits, from day to day,
Be in us and abound.
