Only In the Cross

Lyrics

Verse 1
Wandering in the wilderness
We, like sheep, were lost, alone (Matt. 18:12-13, Luke 15:4-7, Isa. 53:6, Ps. 119:76, I Pet. 2:25)
When our Shepherd sought us out (Ps. 23:1, John 10:11-18, I Pet. 2:25)
And, rejoicing, brought us home (Matt. 18:12-13, Luke 15:4-7)
While the angels’ joy resounds (Luke 15:10)
Should we boast of being found?

Chorus
Come as ransomed sinners
Purchased at a cost (I Cor. 6:19-20, I Pet. 1:18-19)
Ever may our boast be
Only in the cross (Gal. 6:14)

Verse 2
Once we were a withered branch
Broken off a fruitless tree (Rom. 11:16-24)
Grafted in the tree of life (Rev. 22:2, Gen. 2:9, Gen. 3:22-24, Rev. 2:7, Rev. 22:14)
By the Father’s kind decree (Rom. 11:16-24)
Since our life flows from the root
Should we boast of bearing fruit? (John 15:1-6)

Repeat chorus

Verse 3
When our lungs no longer breathe
Dust reclaims our skin and bone (Gen. 3:19, Job 34:15, Psalm 104:29, Ecc. 3:20, Ecc. 12:7)
When we span the universe
Cross where none can cross alone
As we enter Paradise (Luke 23:43)
Should we boast apart from Christ? (Rom. 3:27, I Cor. 1:31, Eph. 2:8-9)

Repeat chorus

Song Story

What does it mean that we boast only in the cross? Well, for one thing, it means that we can’t boast in our salvation. Our Shepherd brought us home; that was His work, so salvation is not of our own work, let we could boast. (That’s verse 1). Verse 2 talks about how we cannot boast about becoming part of the family of God, using Romans 11’s grafting imagery. And verse 3 talks about how we cannot boast about going to Heaven when we die, because we cannot take ourselves there. That leaves us boasting only in the cross.
