Before the World Began

Lyrics

VERSE 1
Before the world began
You heard creation sing
The hills and meadows ringing with Your praise
Our names were in Your master plan
Before the world began

VERSE 2
Before the world began
You knew we would be lost
You knew what it would cost to bring us home
Our names were in Your master plan
Before the world began

BRIDGE
You knew You would become a man like us
Before You fashioned Adam from the dust

VERSE 3
Before the world began
You saw us justified
You saw the spotless bride You died to save
Our names were in Your master plan
Before the world began

Song Story

After I’d written most of the songs for Somewhere East of Eden, I felt like I was still missing the right opening song. I wanted to write something about what happened “Before the World Began,” and ultimately settled on that as the title. So I decided to work through what Scripture tells us about what God was doing before the world began.

Revelation 13:8: “All who dwell on the earth will worship him [the beast], whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.” From the foundation of the world, God has already written the names of those He would save into His book of life.

Ephesians 1:3-6: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.” Before the foundation of the world, God chose us in Him and predestined us to adoption as His sons (and daughters).

We don’t know what else He did before the foundation of the world. But He has chosen to tell us that He’s been looking out for us before the world began. By name.
