Verse 1
From Egypt lately freed (Ex. 12:37-42, Ex. 14:30)
By the Redeemer’s grace; (Eph. 2:8-9)
A rough and thorny path we tread, (Num. 14:33)
In hopes to see his face. (I Cor. 13:12, Rev. 22:4)
Verse 2
The flesh dislikes the way, (Rom. 8:7)
But faith approves it well;
This only leads to endless day, (Rev. 21:25, Rev. 22:5)
All others lead to hell. (Matt. 7:13-14)
Verse 3
The promised land of peace
Faith keeps in constant view;
How different from the wilderness
We now are passing through!
Bridge
Here often from our eyes
Clouds hide the light divine; (I Cor. 13:12)
There we shall have unclouded skies,
Our Sun will always shine. (Isa. 60:19-20, Rev. 21:23)
Verse 4
Here griefs, and cares, and pains,
And fears, distress us sore;
But there eternal pleasure reigns, (Ps. 16:11)
And we shall weep no more. (Isa. 25:8, Rev. 7:17, Rev. 21:4)
