The Lord Is There

Lyrics

Verse 1
Zion stands throughout the ages (Ps. 46:4-5, Ps. 125:1-2)
While its rulers rise and fall
Never-ending battle rages
Hated and oppressed by all (Ps. 83:2-8, Ps. 129:1-2)
It is now a desolation (Ezek. 11:5-12, Ezek. 36:33-36, Ps. 79:1, Lam. 1:1, Lam. 1:5, Lam. 5:18, Isa. 64:10-11, Jer. 9:11, Mic. 3:12)
Though its streets are far from bare (Luke 21:24)
It awaits its restoration (Ezek. 36:33-36, Ezek. 37:26-28)
On the day “the Lord is there” (Ezekiel 48:35)
The Lord is There

Verse 2
Where are Zion’s former glories?
Ichabod is all we’ve known (I Sam. 4:21-22)
Who can still recall the stories
When it held God’s holy throne? (Ps. 48:2-3, Ps. 132:13-14, Jer. 3:17)
But His glory, long departed (Ezek. 10:18, Ezek. 11:23, I Sam. 4:22)
Will, like lightning, fill the air (Matt. 24:27-30, Luke 17:24, Ezek. 43:2, Ps. 102:13-16)
When the skies one day are parted (Isa. 64:1, Rev. 1:7)
On the day “the Lord is there” (Ezekiel 48:35)
The Lord is There

Verse 3
Zion’s filled with shrines and altars
Set apart for other lords (I Kings 11:7, II Kings 21:4-5, II Kings 23:4-5, II Chron. 28:24, II Chron. 33:4, Jer. 11:13, Jer. 19:13)
Faded are the songs of psalters
And the harp’s and trumpet’s chords (Ezek. 26:13, Ps. 137:2, Jer. 7:34, Lam. 5:14, Amos 5:23)
Till the day a trumpet sounding (Matt. 24:31, I Cor. 15:52, I Thess. 4:16)
Hails Messiah in the air (I Thess. 4:17)
And His praises are resounding
On the day “The Lord is there!” (Ezekiel 48:35)
The Lord is There

Verse 4
Zion, rise! Your Lord, appearing (Isa. 60:1)
Comes to claim His rightful throne (Ps. 2:6-8, Isa. 9:6-7, Matt. 25:31, Luke 1:32-33, Acts 2:30, Rev. 19:11-16)
And the nations, trembling, fearing
Worship God and God alone (Ps. 2:8-12, Ps. 96:9, Isaiah 2:2-4, Isa. 45:23, Zech. 14:16, Rom. 14:11, Phil. 2:10-11, Rev. 15:4)
Sound no more laments in Ramah (Jer. 31:15, Matt. 2:18)
Only praises now prepare (Zeph. 3:14-15)
Zion will be Yahweh-Shammah (Ezekiel 48:35)
City named, “The Lord is there” (Ezekiel 48:35, Ezekiel 37:27, Rev. 21:2-3)
The Lord is There

Song Story

I wrote this song as my church was nearing the end of a year-long sermon series through Ezekiel. It’s directly inspired by the final verse of Ezekiel, Ezek. 48:35, “All the way around shall be eighteen thousand cubits; and the name of the city from that day shall be: THE LORD IS THERE” (NKJV). In the Hebrew, that’s Yahweh-Shammah. This is the telos of the song, the point to which everything points and draws; but along the way, we look at this theme through the vantage point of some of Ezekiel’s major themes, God’s glory departing from His temple and the future return of that glory.
