Verse 1
Behold the throne of grace!
The promise calls me near; (Heb. 4:16)
There Jesus shows a smiling face,
And waits to answer prayer. (Heb. 7:25, Rom. 8:34)
That rich atoning blood,
Which sprinkled round I see; (Heb. 12:24, Heb. 9:12, I Pet. 1:2)
Provides for those who come to God,
An all-prevailing plea. (Heb. 10:19)
Verse 2
My soul ask what thou wilt, (Matt. 7:7-8, Luke 11:9-13)
Thou canst not be too bold; (Heb. 4:16, Heb. 10:19)
Since his own blood for thee he spilt,
What else can he withhold? (Rom. 8:32, Ps. 84:11)
Beyond thy utmost wants
His love and pow’r can bless; (Eph. 3:20)
To praying souls he always grants,
More than they can express.
Verse 3
Since ’tis the Lord’s command,
My mouth I open wide; (Ps. 81:10)
Lord open thou thy bounteous hand, (Ps. 104:28, Ps. 145:16)
That I may be supplied.
Thine image, LORD, bestow, (II Cor. 3:18, Gen. 1:27, Gen. 9:6)
Thy presence and thy love;
I ask to serve thee here below,
And reign with thee above. (Rev. 22:3-5, II Tim. 2:12, Rev. 3:21, Rev. 20:6)
Verse 4
Teach me to live by faith, (Hab. 2:4, Rom. 1:17, Gal. 3:11, Heb. 10:38, II Cor. 5:7)
Conform my will to thine; (Rom. 12:2)
Let me victorious be in death, (I Cor. 15:54-57)
And then in glory shine. (Matt. 13:43, Dan. 12:3)
If Thou these blessings give,
And wilt my portion be; (Ps. 119:57, Ps. 142:5, Lam. 3:24)
*Cheerful the world’s poor toys I leave, (Heb. 11:24-26, Phil. 3:7-8)
To them who know not thee.
* Cheerful doesn’t fit the natural emphasis of the hymn meter. “With cheer” could be substituted.
