Verse 1
Hail to the Lord’s anointed! (Ps. 2:2)
Great David’s greater Son; (Ps. 72:1, Matt. 22:45, Mark 12:37, Luke 20:44)
Hail in the time appointed, (Gal. 4:4)
His reign on earth begun! (Rev. 20:6)
He comes to break oppression,
To set the captive free; (Ps. 72:4, Isa. 61:1, Luke 4:18)
To take away transgression, (John 1:29)
And rule in equity. (Isa. 11:4, Isa. 9:7)
Verse 2
He comes, with succor speedy
To those who suffer wrong;
To help the poor and needy,
And bid the weak be strong; (Ps. 72:4, Isa. 35:3-4)
To give them songs for sighing, (Isa. 61:3, Ps. 30:5)
Their darkness turn to light, (Isa. 9:2, Luke 1:79)
Whose souls, condemned and dying,
Were precious in His sight. (Ps. 72:14, Is. 43:4)
Verse 3
He shall come down, like showers (Hos. 6:3)
Upon the fruitful earth, (Ps. 72:6, Isa. 45:8)
And love, joy, hope, like flowers,
Spring in His path to birth:
Before Him, on the mountains,
Shall Peace, the herald, go, (Ps. 72:3, Isa. 52:7)
And righteousness in fountains,
From hill to valley flow. (Ps. 72:3, Amos 5:24)
Verse 4
Kings shall fall down before Him, (Ps. 72:11)
And gold and incense bring; (Ps. 72:10, Isa. 60:3-6, Matt. 2:11, Rev. 21:24)
All nations shall adore Him, (Ps. 72:11, Is. 45:23, Rom. 14:15, Phil. 2:9-11)
His praise all people sing; (Ps. 72:17)
For He shall have dominion (Ps. 72:8)
O’er river, sea and shore, (Ps. 72:8, Zech. 9:10)
Far as the eagle’s pinion
Or dove’s light wing can soar.
Verse 5
O’er every foe victorious,
He on His throne shall rest; (Ps. 72:8-11, I Cor. 15:25)
From age to age more glorious, (Ps. 72:19)
All blessing and all blest. (Ps. 72:17, Ps. 72:19)
The tide of time shall never
His covenant remove; (Isa. 54:10)
His name shall stand forever, (Ps. 72:17)
His name to us is—Love. (I John 4:8, I John 4:16)
