Verse 1
My God, how many are my fears! (Ps. 3:1)
How fast my foes increase! (Ps. 3:1)
Conspiring my eternal death,
They break my present peace.
The lying tempter would persuade
There’s no relief in heav’n; (Ps. 3:2)
And all my swelling sins appear
Too big to be forgiv’n. (Ps. 38:4, Ps. 40:12)
Verse 2
But thou, my glory and my strength, (Ps. 3:3)
Shalt on the tempter tread, (Gen. 3:15, Rom. 16:20)
Shalt silence all my threatening guilt,
And raise my drooping head. (Ps. 3:3)
[I cried, and from his holy hill (Ps. 3:4)
He bowed a listening ear; (Ps. 3:4)
I called my Father, and my God, (Ps. 3:4)
And he subdued my fear. (Ps. 34:4)
Verse 3
He shed soft slumbers on mine eyes, (Ps. 3:5)
In spite of all my foes;
I woke, and wondered at the grace (Ps. 3:5)
That guarded my repose.] (Ps. 4:8)
What though the hosts of death and hell
All armed against me stood, (Ps. 3:6)
Terrors no more shall shake my soul;
My refuge is my God. (Ps. 46:1)
Verse 4
Arise, O Lord, fulfil thy grace, (Ps. 3:7)
While I thy glory sing;
My God has broke [crushed] the serpent’s teeth, (Ps. 3:7, Gen. 3:15)
And death has lost his sting. (I Cor. 15:55-56)
Salvation to the Lord belongs; (Ps. 3:8)
His arm alone can save: (Isa. 59:1, Ps. 44:3)
Blessings attend thy people here, (Ps. 3:8)
And reach beyond the grave.
